Castle Hill Peak, Torlesse Range

Looking across the Plains from near the summit of Castle Hill Peak (1999m) towards Christchurch and Bank's Peninsula (the Port Hills) after a winter snowfall. Compare this with the Summer view. A Southerly from Antarctica can bring heavy snow falls almost to sea level. Such an occurrence at the beginning of Spring is not uncommon, but can be a tragedy for early lambing.
