Looking from the summit of Ruapehu as the sun sets. Mt Taranaki is on the right horizon. Rivers flow west to join the Wanganui River (also a National Park). Unfortunately most of them are diverted by 100's of kilometres of tunnels which ring the volcanic plateau. These form part of the Tongariro power scheme.
Mountains to the Sea
The "Mountains to the Sea" is an annual event which includes running down Ruapehu, kayaking much of the Wanganui river and cycling, eventually to emerge at the Tasman Sea. |
