Otehake valley, Arthur's Pass

The island campsite in the Otehake river. Cold water on the left, hot water on the right. The white dot on the rock at the left is a CUTC tramper (Stephanie) about to go for a cold plunge in the river after soaking in the hot pools. A series of floods has meant that the rock is now long gone and the swimming hole filled-in, but the hot springs are still there! No doubt the swimming hole will reappear one day.

This view is taken at the head of the island. Although it doesn't look likely, the island widens to provide excellent camping beneath the beech trees - complete with a fireplace. There is good camping on the (true) right of the river if you're worried about being swept away.
