Mt Aspiring, Mt Aspiring National Park

Mt Aspiring, sunrise 4:30 AM from the Quarter Deck. This is perhaps the least impressive view of Mt Aspiring. Although it looks like a pimple at the edge of the Bonar Glacier, its a big pimple! After dropping on to the Bonar Glacier, there is still 2-3kms to the Norwest ridge (left) and a further 1000m of height to be gained. Of course it's quicker if you want to climb the sunlit South Face.... (The classic route is the Southwest ridge - the middle ridge in this view). Some say Aspiring is the Matterhorn of the Southern Alps, but having seen the real thing, it's nowhere near as impressive (nothing beats that view from Zermatt).
