Climbers on the ridge leading up to the Aiguille du Midi pause to look
back towards Mt Blanc (4805m). The skyline Gouter ridge is prominent on
the horizon. From right to left, the ridge rises steeply to the
Aiguille du Gouter then continues up to the Dome du Gouter then onward
to the distinctive Dome of Mt Blanc - the high summit (map). This is the
standard accent route by which the mountain was first climbed in the
mid-late 1700s. Glaciers tumble down the northern slopes to the alpine resort
town of Chamonix - some 3800m below. |
