Mt Tapuaenuku, rafting the Clarence river

Mt Tapuaenuku from the Clarence river - day 4. The river here is less than 300m above sea-level while Tapi looms 2885m above - and a fair horizontal distance away too. The easy Northwest ridge and snow field are depicted in this view. The saddle between Mt Alarm and Tapi is visible at the right along with the gendarme depicted in the mid-winter view from the saddle. This early December scene contrasts with the winter conditions - it was a hot 30C or so as we headed into the final twisting gorge of the Clarence where it breaks through the Seaward Kaikoura range and makes its dash for the Pacific.

The single day accent and return from the Clarence river to the summit really makes the rafting trip... but its only possible if the weather cooperates (and you can climb 8000ft in one go OK!).
