Mt Rolleston, Arthur's Pass National Park

Catherine McKie on the Crow face of Mt Rolleston (2200m), just before an icy steep bit. Below us a 1.5m step in the snow slope indicated where a recent (worryingly large) slab avalanche had taken off down into the Crow valley. The Crow face is the south face of the Low Peak - consequently it tends to ice-up in Winter. A small glacier (the Crow Glacier) occupies a shelf between the Low and High Peaks above.

This photo was taken the day following a large addition to Arthur's Pass National Park in the East which increased its area by a third. It took 30 odd years for this addition to propagate through the system!
