Central Crater, Mt Tongariro

Central Crater, Mt Tongariro. Steam rises from active Red Crater. The barren landscape on the top of Tongariro is very fragile, though a few plants struggle to colonise the hostile environment. The lava flow next to the tent is from the late 1800s. Finding non-toxic (mineral-free!) water can be a problem and camping, for environmental reasons, is not really appropriate.
