Franz Joseph Glacier, Westland National Park

A quick visit to the terminal face of the Franz Joseph Glacier on the way home from the Hooker trip - the last obstacle? Tourists.

At this time the terminal face was advancing down the valley at 1-2m per day! If you look carefully you can see a walker dressed in yellow PVC on the ice.. no ice axes, no crampons.

  • The Waiho river emerges from the terminal face.
  • Above the Franz Joseph Glacier on Alex Knob.
  • Descending Alex Knob through scrub above the glacier.
