The Upper Otoko River, Hooker Wilderness

Bouldering down the Otoko - day 6. After leaving the snow behind it was full immersion in the river which comes out of the Otoko glacier. Negotiating this upper part involved clambering over house-sized rocks, lowering packs down boulders, climbing under boulders and periodically leaping into the waist-deep torrent. Occasionally we even came out below the river! It was wet ...but it was better than the scrub. Plastic boots are great, if not heavy, for this kind of terrain.

We made the 7PM radio schedule just in time - setting up camp on the flat beneath Mt Dechen and the "motorway" (a 1000m shoot which regularly delivered avalanche and ice fall debris throughout the night).
