The Heaphy Track, Kahurangi National Park

Mountain biking the Heaphy Track - one of the "great walks" in North West Nelson (Kahurangi National Park). Normally a four day walk for many, the 77km track links sandy West Coast beaches north of Karamea with Collingwood, inland Nelson, via a 3000ft Pass and a high plateau. We biked the track in pouring rain in a weekend. Although an easy walking track (ideal for running) it is tough on bikes.

Here we are repairing bikes at Heaphy hut (at the mouth of the Heaphy river) after the first 20km of riding alongside the beach through groves of Nikau palms. Very scenic. The horses in the background are cunning local inhabitants... They collaborate to drink from the sink.. one operating the tap while the other drinks. They also try and get inside the hut... one even stole my red bowl!
